Dr. Xu Yan

Dr Xu received his B.E. and M.E. degrees from South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China, in 2008 and 2011, and PhD degree from The University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia, in 2013, all in electrical engineering.

He conducted postdoctoral research with University of Sydney Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Sydney in Australia, and then joined Nanyang Technological University with Nanyang Assistant Professorship at NTU. He was promoted to Associate Professor (with tenure) in 2021, and since 2024 has been appointed as the Cham Tao Soon Professor in Engineering (an endowed professorship named after NTU’s founding president). He concurrently serves as the Director of Center for Power Engineering (CPE), and Co-Director of SingaporePower Group–NTU Joint Lab.

Dr Xu and his SODA (Stability, Optimization, and Data-Analytics) power system research group are working on the following areas:
1) stability and control of renewable-energy power systems
2) microgrids and distributed energy resource (DER) integration
3) data-analytics for smart grid applications

As the first/corresponding author, Dr Xu has published 3 books, 123 IEEE Transactions and 35 IET journal papers, including 20 "Web-of-Science highly cited papers”. He has received 10 IEEE/IET paper contest and conference best paper awards, 2022 IET Premium Award (Best Paper), 2021 IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid Outstanding Paper Award, 2020 IET Energy Conversion & Economics, Premium Paper Award, and 2018 Applied Energy Highly Cited Paper Award.

In Singapore, his research is funded by National Research Foundation (NRF), Ministry of Education (MOE), Energy Market Authority (EMA), Housing & Development Board (HDB), DSO National Laboratories, Rolls-Royce, Singtel, Infineon, JTC (Jurong Town Corporation), SingaporePower (SP) Group, Lite-On, and technology start-up companies, etc. Many of his research outcomes have been practically applied/licensed to the industry. Besides, he has been practically collaborating with many universities in Australia, China, Hong Kong SAR, UK, Denmark, France, Switzerland, India, and the USA through joint research projects and research student exchanges.

Dr Xu’s professional services include Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions (TSG and TPWRS), IET journals (GTD and ECE), and China’s international power engineering journals (CSEE JPES and MPCE). He has served as the Chairman (2020-2021) for IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Singapore Chapter which won the 2021 Best Chapter Award in IEEE Singapore Section, and the General Co-Chair for the 11th IEEE ISGT-Asia Conference 1-5 Nov. 2022, Singapore.
